The Des Moines Playhouse
For well over 80 years, The Des Moines Playhouse, the nation’s third oldest community theater, has produced musical and dramatic productions on the main stage and currently offers a seven-show season performed by volunteers.
The theater was built in 1934 as a 600-seat, B movie theater, was originally known as The Roosevelt Theater. The building has influences of a Spanish Revival style with its tall, stone façade and arched entries. The original open foyer has been enclosed to add space and complements the rest of the building. When proposed, residents of the adjacent Hubbell elementary school Parent Teacher Organization opposed the commercial zoning. Not only did the residents believe the theater would increase traffic hazards, but they contended that “disgraceful movie posters” would be erected near the eyes of the children.
